O Meadow44 Web Index

About & Editorial Policy

Meadow44 began as a straightforward project: to arrange a collection of web addresses into a browsable index, organized by subject rather than by popularity or algorithmic weight. The result is an open catalog of 830 sites grouped across 22 sections, maintained in the spirit of a reference shelf that anyone can pull from. The index takes its cue from the card-catalog tradition, where a library's holdings were arranged not by what was popular but by what subject they addressed. Each section of Meadow44 corresponds to a broad domain of human activity — from dental care and legal practice to travel, wagering, and technology — and each entry within a section is filed on the basis of what the site is primarily about. New additions are accepted by submission and go through a brief review before they are filed. There is no charge to list a site and no editorial preference given to any entry over another. Once filed, a listing remains in the index indefinitely unless the site goes offline or is found to violate the submission guidelines. The catalog is organised into 22 sections ranging in size from five entries to nearly two hundred. The largest section, Sundries & Miscellany, holds the sites that resisted any more specific classification. Visitors who are curious about the web as it is rather than as an algorithm presents it are the intended audience for Meadow44. Additions and corrections can be submitted through the form linked from the top of every page. The index is offered freely and without restriction.
